Simm Engineering’s Andy Turner has been back behind the wheel for another rally challenge – and once again his driving skills have literally lifted him into the winners circle.
Andy, along with his co-driver Richard Winstanley, competed on the Welsh Marshes Mini Epynt Stage Rally on Sunday 5 June in their Simm Engineering Group / Atlas Copco liveried Citroen C2R2MAX rally car.
The event consisted of 10 timed stages (45 competitive miles) over the notorious tarmac roads of the Epynt military ranges in mid-Wales. Out of 80 crews, the pair were seeded car 22 for the event and were 5th on the road in respect of their class competition in the 1400cc to 1600cc Class.
The event saw stiff competition for the pair, who passed comment that the cream of the 1600cc class runners in the UK and Wales were on show, so a class award would be tough to achieve.
The day was a glorious hot summer day, making it hard work on the crews and cars, but the pair were consistently in the top 20 all day and battling for 3rd and 4th in class.
Going into the last stage Andrew and Richard were just one second behind the 3rd in class. A nail-biting final big push saw them take 3rd in class by two seconds, finishing a strong 14th overall.
Their next event will see them travel south for the Wethersfield Stages near Braintree, Essex on August Bank Holiday weekend.
