Sunday 30th September saw Simm Engineering Group’s Service Manager, Andrew Turner, compete on the AGBO Stages Rally at Weston Park in Shropshire with his regular co-driver Richard Winstanley.
Seeded at car 37 and third seed in class, the pair set about learning the venue which was new to them. This had them on the back foot against their class competition who’d competed on these stages over the years – but the pair wouldn’t let that deter them. With the stages being fairly short, the pace was very quick fire and the smallest of mistakes would be detrimental to stage times and the overall result.
After five stages, lunch time had arrived and crew in the Atlas Copco & Simm Engineering Group liveried Honda Civic were up to 25th overall and trading times with first in class, but at the mid-day point the deficit stood at seven seconds to the class leaders.
During the afternoon stages Andrew and Richard dropped a further four seconds to the leaders, with the gap up to 11 seconds after stage seven. Stage eight though had a cruel twist for the class leaders who went out into retirement, this automatically inherited the Simm Engineering Group crew the lead of the class, which they held until the finish.
The outcome was 21st overall and first in class by 37 seconds.
The team are now looking forward to 2019 with a few more events on the cards, spreading across the UK and may even include a trip to Ireland or Isle of Man.
